In 1969, 2 males and 4 females with spontaneous hypercholesterolemia were selected from different colonies of albino rats. By sib-mating and selective breeding, Muller et al. established this hypercholesterolemic strain and named RICO (rats with increased cholesterol) (Muller, 1979). 1997, from Australia ARC (animal resource centre) to Nagasaki University.
